Um, yes, that Dusty Baker. The writer is the former hard-hitting outfielder (Braves and Dodgers) and long-time manager (Giants, Cubs, Reds, Nationals).First, what a great idea for a series of books. Second, this should make anyone a Dusty Baker fan; he comes across as a very likable, laid-back guy.Third, the subtitle is a bit misleading. Yes, he was at the Monterey Pop Festival as a teenager. And, yes, he was there as an enthusiastic music fan with a wide range of tastes. But the festival comes [...]

This book is a fun read, especially for people who were young during the 60's and 70's. Lots of great stories about music, musicians and baseball. Not surprising that I have a better admiration for Dusty Baker. I share his love for music and the musicians of the time. And I enjoyed reading about his baseball career. What IS surprising for me is a new respect for the Atlanta Braves. The Braves signed Satchel Page to a major league contract when he was in his 60's. They kept him on their roster fo [...]

Forgot to update! This is an incredibly quick read that I nearly finished on a 4 hour flight from Chicago to San Francisco And took me 10 days to pick it up and finish. Great book to get me started to enjoy reading again. For me, hearing about all the past great music legends (Santana, Jimi, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker to name a few) Dusty had encountered during a time in American music history is quite impressive. But also it coincides with a time of racial strife in this country. Being a spo [...]

Solid 4 stars. Dusty Baker uses a concert as a springboard to talk about how much music impacted his life. I previously worked with Dusty for a year and have covered his teams on a few occasions - i knew he was an interesting person, but didn't know the depths of his knowledge. This book is a nice simple short read and you can enjoy it without knowing all the musical references (it definitely helps to know some).

A fun read, and a perfect antidote toThe Big Wheel: Rock & Roll and Roadside Attractions, which I interrupted to read this slight volume. Unlike Bruce Thomas, Dusty will never be mistaken for a writer: there is a feeling that this was actually dictated, as if Dusty is rapping with us about his past, which is refreshing.

Dusty Baker's early on experience about listening to live music is a really inspiring story to read. While I was sitting on the library house door steps, I realized that I was reading about someone's life. It occurred to me how natural the writing flowed throughout the book and how much I could appreciate a story about a life-changing experience. I've been listening to Jimi Hendrix music on a garage sale cd for awhile, so that aspect of the book peeked my interest. After having just met the auth [...]

An interesting book by a good ballplayer, a good manager, but a horrible writer. Filled with a lot of name dropping and bad comparisons between baseball and music, this was not what I wanted to read. I had hoped for a little more historical content on the Monterey Pop Festival and the late sixties music scene but had to settle for baseball anecdotes and Dusty Bakers take on life. Really not worth the two hours spent in reading this short and not so sweet semi-biography.

so glad I found this sweet little book by Dusty Baker - probably the only big league manager who's eaten sandwiches with Jimmy Carter at the Governor's mansion in Georgia, gone fishing with Elvin Bishop and smoked a joint with Jiimi Hendrix (really!) a gently evocative slice-of-life memoir that leaves you wanting to talk baseball and tunes with the author into the wee hours

Fairly quick read. Some very interesting stories. Book actually gets better as you continue. will definitely have you searching down the internet rabbit hole for more details about Monterey. Apparently it's the first of a 1st-person series related to music. Will be on the lookout for the next release.

nice ,easy biopic of growing up to be a ballplayer with music as another first love. Clear, direct, almost simple but appealing
